Historic Town of Banská Štiavnica and the Technical Monuments in its Vicinity

Banská Štiavnica is and old mining city, famous for its huge production of silver and other precious metals from the past. Many outstanding engineers and scientist visited this town and contributed to its fame. This old medieval mining centre grew into splendid town with Renaissance palaces,more than 500-years-old churches, elegant castles and cosy squares. The centre of the town blends with surrounding landscape, which contains vital relic of the mining character of the city.

In the historic centre of the town there are 360 artistic and historical monuments. To some of the most precious and famous monuments belongs the Old Castle and the New Castle, Kammerhof – the former seat of the mining chamber and the main chamber office that administrated the mines, iron mills and mines in the area of central Slovakia (it is the largest building complex on the territory of the city), the Knocking Tower, the Holy Trinity Square with the Column of Holy Trinity (built by the town to thank the Lord for destroying the plague epidemic), the Rose Street. One of the dominant towers above the city on the hill is the Baroque Calvary.
